Plan the evening, then run the cable.
Glowfield lights houses from Stirling and the Hills down to the eastern suburbs. We work out where every light goes, room by room, before a cable goes in the wall. Start with this room. It’s dark.

A room lit from the middle feels like a waiting room.
The usual fix for a dark room is one more downlight in the middle of the ceiling. It lights the floor, and nobody sits on the floor.

Computed on this page for a room drawn for it. Illustrative.
Solved at full output: the dimmer takes it down from there. U0 is the darkest spot over the average, so the closer it is to one, the more even the room.
Even isn’t the goal. Where you sit is.
We start from where you’ll be at seven: the end of the sofa, the bench, the chair by the window. Then we work back to the ceiling, and only then to the cable.
This is the room above, from overhead, with the lights you placed. Move one and we solve the room again. The same lights are in the photograph at the top of the page, and in your note to us at the bottom.
C1 · Lights · Four rooms · One evening
One evening, four rooms.
An evening moves through a house. Each room wants a different light at its hour, on a control you can find in the dark.

A pot on, a board out, a recipe propped against the tiles. Light on the bench and on your hands, and the rest of the room kept soft.

C2 · Power · Hall cupboard
A board you can read.
A lot of boards in the Hills were fitted for a kettle, a fridge and a few ceiling roses. A new kitchen, a heat pump and a car in the carport ask more of them.
We start by opening the board and writing down what’s on each circuit, in plain words, on a card that stays inside the door. Then we talk about what the house needs next, and whether the board has room for it or wants replacing.
New circuits go where the evening needs them: the bench on its own, the charger on its own, the lights you dim apart from the ones you don’t.
Point at a breaker to read what it feeds.
The card for the room at the top of the page. Yours will be longer.
The strip sits at the front of the cabinet lip, so light lands on the chopping board, not the splashback.
The pendant hangs low enough to light the bench and high enough to talk over.
Power goes where the appliances actually live, so nothing trails across the bench.
C3 · Kitchen · 6:30 pm
Light on the bench, not on your back.
Most kitchens are lit from the middle of the ceiling, so you cook in your own shadow.
We light the bench from the front of the cabinets, hang the pendant for the island, and put the power where you use it. This is the room at the top of the page, closer in. Each switch is a circuit of its own.
C4 · EV · Carport · 9:30 pm
A charger where the car sleeps.
A charger is a short job and a long habit. We put it where the car is actually left at night, and give it a circuit of its own.
Where it goes
By the car’s nose, out of the path, the cable reaching without a stretch.
What we check first
What the board can take, the length of the run, and where the car actually parks.
Overnight
Charging on a timer while the house sleeps, on a circuit of its own.
C5 · Controls · All evening
Three buttons by the door.
Keypads that say what they do. Scenes set once, the evening we finish, and changed whenever you like.
A sensor on the garden path, so the way in lights before you reach it. A phone as an extra, never the only way to turn on a light. A plain switch still works when the rest is asleep.
C5 · How a job goes · Four visits
How a job goes.
Four visits, one cable. The light is worked out before the wiring, and the wiring before the plaster.
01
A walk-through at dusk
We come when the light is going, if we can, so we see the house the way you use it.
02
The light plan, drawn and solved
Each room drawn from above, every fitting placed, and the light on the floor and the bench worked out before anything is bought.
03
Cable, board and fittings
New circuits where the plan needs them, the board if it wants it, and every circuit written on the card.
04
The first evening
We come back after dark to set the dimmers and scenes with you.
